Setting goals is important for any activity, but especially for activities of daily living, which are the basic activities necessary for survival. These activities include eating, drinking, sleeping, and Elimination. Most people take these activities for granted, but for some, accomplishing them can be a real challenge. That’s why it’s important to set goals for activities of daily living. When setting goals, it’s important to be realistic. If you set goals that are too high, you may become discouraged and give up. On the other hand, if you set goals that are too low, you may not challenge yourself enough and may not see the results you want. It’s also important to be specific when setting goals. For example, rather than setting a goal to “exercise more,” set a goal to “walk for 30 minutes every day.” Here are some other tips for setting goals for activities of daily living: • Set small, achievable goals. • Make a plan for how you will achieve your goals. • Set a deadline for yourself. • Find a support group or partner to help you stay on track. • Reward yourself for reaching your goals.

It is not possible for students to do the majority of the tasks that are deemed critical daily activities without the use of daily living skills. There are teachers, parents, family members, friends, and other professionals who can teach and practice daily living skills for students, but they must take the lead in doing so. When developing their annual goals for IEP, these activities of daily living can provide ideas for the special education team. Every IEP goal must have a set of objectives. These are the smaller steps to reach the overall goal. Individualizing daily living skills goals and interventions is critical for each student. You may want to discuss specific vocational training goals with a young adult with disabilities.

When developing daily living skills goals and interventions, students should think about how their day will be like. A student with difficulty dressing may require assistance putting on clothes, but can fold their own clothes if they are able to do so. The lack of motivation or sadness may be a problem for students who suffer from depression, but they can overcome it by using their creativity and problem-solving skills. Students must have realistic goals and objectives in order to live independently. When setting goals, consider areas of need and areas of strength. It is critical to consider how the student’s life will be in the real world. Occupational therapists can help set goals and assist people with everyday living skills.
